A nighttime traffic control in Lubin resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old resident of the Żagań County. The case is also significant for the residents of Bolesławiec and the region, as it involves a vehicle lost abroad and suspicions related to car thefts.
The incident occurred around 3:15 AM on Generała Maczka Street in Lubin. Traffic police noticed a BMW with German license plates. The driver, seeing the patrol, clearly slowed down and then tried to pull into the parking lot of one of the stores. Officers suspected he might want to avoid the check, so they stopped the vehicle.
Behind the wheel was a 41-year-old resident of Żagań County. After checking his details in police systems, it turned out that his driver's license had been revoked by the county governor. Therefore, the man did not have the right to drive the vehicle.
Further findings revealed that the BMW was listed as a vehicle lost in Germany in August of this year. The driver did not have documents allowing the car to be on the road or a liability insurance policy. According to police information, he initially convinced the officers that he had legally purchased the car, but he did not present a bill of sale or documents confirming this version.
During the search of the car, the police secured an item that could be used for vehicle theft. They also found plant material in the vehicle, which, after preliminary verification, showed characteristics of a prohibited substance.
Officers tested the 41-year-old for the presence of intoxicants. The result was positive and indicated amphetamine and methamphetamine. The man reportedly admitted to having used drugs earlier. A blood sample was taken for further testing.
After checking police databases, it also turned out that the arrested individual has a rich criminal history, including involvement in vehicle thefts. The 41-year-old was placed in a police cell, and the BMW was secured for legal proceedings.
Police are conducting further actions. Investigators are to determine how the man came into possession of the car and what connection he may have with its loss in Germany.
